7 Deadly Sins of Email Newsletters: business card dumping

    By Karen Skidmore | May 2, 2008

7 deadly sins email newslettersThere are 7 deadly sins of email newsletter publishing and the first one in this list is the dreaded business card dump.

Email newsletters are a form of permission-based marketing.  What this means is that all email addresses on your distribtion list must have been given to you with express permission from their owners.  Without their permission you will be essentially spamming your list.

And I am sure you do not want to classified as a spammer, do you?

Business card dumping is the “art” of collecting as many business cards as you can at networking events and business exhibitons and “dumping” their email addresses in to your newsletter list.  It’s one thing emailing someone after meeting them, following up on your conversation and, if appropiate, explain your services (something I would recommend) but it’s totally unacceptable to assume that this person would like to be continually emailed by you through your newsletter.

Email newsletters are an amazing client magnet, helping you to attract prospective enquires and convert them to paying customers and clients.  But building your list using the business card dumping strategy will be the quickest way of turning your email newsletter in to a client repellant.
