4 subject headings not to use for your email newsletter
By Karen Skidmore | April 22, 2008
It’s one thing building up a database of names and email addresses, but if no-one bothers to open and read the emails that you send out it is all a waste of time.
If you want to increase your open rates and your chances of having your email newsletter read, here are some examples of what NOT to include in your subject heading.
1. MyCompany Monthly Newsletter
How dull and uninspiring! And yet how many email newsletters do you receive like this? Does this subject make you open and read immediately, or do you move it in to the dreaded “must read” file.
2. MyCompany Latest News
Latest news? Come on, tell your newsletter subscribers what the latest news is in the subject heading. “Upgrade released for 123 widget” or “New colours available” will tell your customers about your latest offers and encourage the interested readers to read and act now.
3. FREE or Make Money
Obvious money phrases such as “free” and “make money” will cause your email to be caught up by the spam filters. If you really need to use the word free, you use spaces such as “Fr ‘ee” but be aware that these combinations can still trigger the spam filters too.
4. Keep you going all night long
OK, so this email may be about an article that shows you how to work more effectively in the evenings or perhaps how to sleep better. But I don’t have to point out the obvious double-entender. Be aware of any sexual undertones and re-write if you feel it may be taken the wrong way. The spam filters are robot software so will not be able second guess your good intentions.
What else have you come across that you know just doesn’t work? Leave your thoughts below in the comments box.
